Welcome to the new version of the Tobacco Documents System (TDS)
for Australasia.
TDS Australasia's main focus is on tobacco industry internal documents
that concern Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia,
New Zealand, The Philippines and Thailand from the files of Philip
Morris Incorporated, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Brown &
Williamson, the American Tobacco Company, Lorillard Tobacco Company,
The Council for Tobacco Research--U.S.A., Inc., The Tobacco Institute
and British American Tobacco (BAT).
An important change is that database is now incorporating materials
from sources other than the internal industry documents. The database
is expanding to include information from a range of different sources
such as documents from the filing cabinets of the late Dr
Cotter Harvey, materials collected and produced by Peter
Vogel, an antismoking activist active in the early 1980s in
BUGAUP, examples of old
cigarette advertisements, old photographs showing the Marlboro
trademark on children's toys, and select media stories. To find
out more about the new materials click
here.
For tobacco industry documents, about 80% of the available tobacco
industry documents concerning the project countries for TDS Australasia
are of little, if any significance, being duplicates, copies of
public documents or blank manilla folders. The TDS system has excluded
most of these, loading only those that may hold interest to researchers
and tobacco control advocates. The Legacy
Tobacco Documents Library and Tobacco
Documents Online are maintaining an indexed archive of all copies
of tobacco industry documents representing the industry websites
as of July 1999 and progressively updating their collections as
new material is added to the industry websites.

Records for industry documents provide descriptive information
about the document such as the title, date, source and bates number,
value-added in most circumstances with a summary (interpretive information),
subject headings, a document rating with a link to the document
image. The source images are in PDF
format.
Records for materials from non industry sources provide a brief
description of the material and where available a link to the source
image. Records that have document images have a VIEW FILE option.
There will be many circumstances where a source image is not available,
for example parliamentary debates.
The database offers just over 11,000 industry documents and over
5600 records from non industry sources. New material will be added
on a weekly basis over the next 6 months.
Please review the database
search help before querying the database.

You can search the TDS database by either conducting a Quick
Search or an Advanced Search. The
search interface will only work with Internet Explorer 5.0 or Netscape
Navigator 6.0 and above.
The Quick Search option
enables keyword searching across all fields. You can enter either
a word or a phrase into the search box to locate records. The Advanced
Search offers more features to search and limit results and
will be improved further over the coming months.
To search other key secondary tobacco document collections around
the world click on Other Collections.
To review papers published by the research team at the University
of Sydney based on investigations of tobacco industry documents
go to the USyd Research
Publications section.
