Tobacco Control in the 21st Century

Professor Simon Chapman's annual course on tobacco control will run in 2008 over three days on 31 July, 1 Aug and 4 Aug, with assitance from Mary Assunta MPhil PhD, chair of the Framework Convention Alliance; Becky Freeman (former CEO of Action on Smoking and Health, New Zealand); Michelle Scollo (former head of Quit Victoria and Tobacco Control's Australasian editor); and Ross Mackenzie (formerly with London School of Hygeine & Tropical Medicine). The three day intensive will be run at the University of Sydney's School of Public Health.

These three days will be followed by 4 weeks of on-line, problem-based intensives where participants -- at convenient times to them during the four weeks -- join in strategy discussions about four contemporary problems in tobacco control. This can be done from anywhere in the world. See here for the draft program, list pf problem based topics and assessment. The course is open to Master of Public Health and Master of International Public Health students at the University of Sydney, as well as to approved external applicants.

Assessment: 60% for 2 x 2000 word written assignments; 30% on-line participation (originality, quality, responsiveness, timeliness); 10% timed on-line 100 item quiz)

Enrollment Information:

If you are not a student in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney would like to enroll in PUBH5418 unit of study as a short course, you have two options:

1. Enrolling as a non-award student through the University: this means that you are enrolling in this unit of study only, not an entire degree course.You will need to go through the full enrolment procedure. If you enroll as a non-award student, you will be expected to take part in all learning and assessment activities. If you fail the unit, for example by not submitting compulsory assessment tasks or by failing them, an AF (Absent Fail) will be recorded on your academic transcript. You will pay the standard university rate for the unit of study. You will be able to count the unit of study towards one of our degrees, as long as you do so within two years of completing the unit.

You should take this route if you hope to use your participation in this course as credit toward a degree at another university (you will be able to provide them with an official transcript).

Applicants wanting to undertake any of the units of study of the School's coursework programs as short course need to complete a non-award application form.

Cancellation Policy:

For non-award enrolments: All cancellations must be in writing to Postgraduate Administration (see above) before the census date for the unit of study.

2. Enrolling directly through the School: if you enrol in this way, the enrolment procedure is simplified, for example you won’t need to provide evidence of your identity or previous studies.

Further, while you may be expected to complete assessment tasks (check with the coordinator of your course whether this is the case) and you may be given a ‘mark’, the results will not be recorded on an academic transcript. You will not be able to claim credit for this unit towards one of our degrees.

Fees: Course fees are based on official University rates, which in 2008 stand at $385 per credit point for SPH units for local students and $AUD630 for international students per credit point (if enrolling through the University and a transcript is required). The course is a 6 credit point unit of study (ie $AUD2310 for local students and $AUD3780 for international students). The University's tuition fees are reviewed annually and may be varied during the period of study.

If you do not require and transcript and enrol through the School, international students can also pay $AUD2310. An unofficial letter from the course coordinator can be provided indicating your attendance and assessment marks (if applicable). You will need to pay the course fee at the time of enrolment. We regret that no scholarships or fee-waivers are available.

Please note: This is NOT a course for people working in smoking cessation in clinical settings, wishing to help individuals quit smoking. It is a population-wide focussed course designed to reduce the harms caused by tobacco use in whole populations.
