Welcome to the Tobacco Control Supersite
The site has two main purposes:

  • To enable you to explore internal, previously private tobacco industry documents and read the work of the document research team at the University of Sydney.

  • To provide access to a wide range of information relevant to smoking prevention and control in Australia.

Background
In the 1990s, a vast quantity of information from the filing cabinets of the tobacco industry became available through legal action in the United States. Over 40 million pages of documents were made available on the internet for 10 years. This is an incredible resource for tobacco control, and has the potential to support comprehensive tobacco regulation, litigation, public health advocacy and historical scholarship. However, it is also a potential quagmire, as a huge proportion of the documents are empty or meaningless, such as photocopies of manilla folders or dividers, and there is very limited indexing of the documents.

The tobacco industry document research team at the University of Sydney have been funded by the National Health & Medical Research Council (Australia) # 153857 & the National Institutes of Health (USA) #1 R01 CA87110-01A1, to find information in the documents that pertains to Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Hong Kong, in association with local consultants from those regions. Under these grants, the team are working to identify key documents and write papers which make their contents readily available in a meaningful context.

What's Included

This site will provide you with access to electronic copies of the most important original documents and the research output of the team. The collection will continue to grow each week, and we urge you to visit often for new material.

The site also continues the traditions of the original Tobacco Control Supersite, providing extensive tobacco control information including links to current news items; links to resources on tobacco use statistics, links to resources on the effects of smoking on health; information on the activities of the tobacco industry to promote tobacco use, etc.

The Tobacco Industry Document Gateway will take you to the Australasian document collection as well as providing links to key secondary tobacco document collections around the world. Papers and chronologies based on investigations of tobacco industry documents by the Australian Research Team will also be available in the Gateway section. News contains largely Australian media coverage of tobacco related issues and Resources contains links to important reports and other resources such as the Tobaccopedia and the Picture Gallery. Links will take you to important tobacco control organisations and websites, as well as providing links to tobacco companies. Tobacco Control Journal will take you to the homepage of Tobacco Control, a quarterly scientific journal launched in 1992 to consider all aspects of tobacco prevention and control, edited by Simon Chapman. Finally, Courses, will take you to study opportunities in tobacco control at the University of Sydney.

Thank you for visiting the site. We hope you find it useful in the continuing fight against disease caused by products manufactured and marketed by the tobacco industry.
