In the 1990s, a vast quantity of information from the filing cabinets
of the tobacco industry became available through legal action in
the United States. Over 40 million pages of documents were made
available on the internet for 10 years. This is an incredible resource
for tobacco control, and has the potential to support comprehensive
tobacco regulation, litigation, public health advocacy and historical
scholarship. However, it is also a potential quagmire, as a huge
proportion of the documents are empty or meaningless, such as photocopies
of manilla folders or dividers, and there is very limited indexing
of the documents.
The tobacco industry document research team at the University of
Sydney have been funded by the National Health & Medical Research
Council (Australia) # 153857 & the National Institutes of Health
(USA) #1 R01 CA87110-01A1, to find information in the documents
that pertains to Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Malaysia,
Thailand, Indonesia, China and Hong Kong, in association with local
consultants from those regions. Under these grants, the team are
working to identify key documents and write papers which make their
contents readily available in a meaningful context.
