US Surgeon General Report The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke (Jun 2006)
The report finds that secondhand smoke exposure can cause heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking adults and is a known cause of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory problems, ear infections, and asthma attacks in infants and children. The report recommends smoking bans in indoor areas.

Environmental Tobacco Smoke in Australia
Review report prepared by the VicHealth Centre for Tobacco Control in May 2001 and published in 2002 by the Department of Health as an occasional for the National Tobacco Strategy 1999 to 2002–03. The review was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health Ageing.

 
     
 

The Health Effects of Passive Smoking NHMRC Report
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) established a Working Party to update the NHMRC's 1986 report Effects of passive smoking on health. This scientific information paper was published in November 1997.

     
 

NOHSC Position Statement Concerning ETS
The Australian National Occupational Health & Safety Commission (NOHSC) issued a position statement on 13 December 2002 recommending "exposure to environmental tobacco smoke should be excluded in all Australian workplaces". The Guidance Note on Passive Smoking in the Workplace [NOHSC:3019(1994)] has been withdrawn as has been revised to conform to the new NOHSC position: Guidance Note on the Elimination of Environmental Tobacco Smoke in the Workplace [NOHSC:3019(2003)].

Published in February 2001 by the NSW Cancer Council, this report provides an overview of the emergence of the passive smoking issue in Australia, discusses the health effects of environmental tobacco smoke and presents data on passive smoking legal cases.

     
 

NSW Department of Housing Smokefree Policy
From 1 July 2005, the NSW Department of Housing has banned smoking in internal common areas within Department properties. The Department will erect signs in common rooms, shared laundries, stairwells, hallways, entranceways, lift areas and other enclosed common areas indicating that these areas are non-smoking. The Department manages 68,000 units in NSW.

Smoke-Free Bars and Restaurants in Norway (Jun 2005)
Smoke free bars and restaurants in Norway were implemented on June 1, 2004. To coincide with the first anniversary of the smokefree bars and restaurants law, an evaluation report was published on 1 June 2005. The preliminary results from the Norwegian smoking ban revealed a general willingness to comply both among employees and customers.

This 2006 revision was produced in conjunction with major USA tobacco control agencies. It contains guiding principles for campaign strategy, best practices on policy language, and general recommendations based on past lessons learned from smokefree advocates across the USA.

 
     

The Proposed Identification of Environmental Tobacco Smoke as a Toxic Air Contaminant (Cal-EPA 2005 report)
The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal-EPA) published a report on the health effects of secondhand smoke on June 24, 2005. New findings in the Cal-EPA report include: a causal link between secondhand smoke exposure and pre-term delivery; asthma induction in adults; breast cancer in younger, primarily premenopausal women; and altered vascular properties. Copies are also available in the UCSF e-scholarship digital archive Main Report Parts A&B and Part C (Public Comments and ARB/OEHHA Staff Responses). Note: The draft version was released on 21 October 2004 and was written as an update to the 1997 report "Health Effects of Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke", which was later published by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in their ETS monograph series.
