Summary: |
Presentation slides from ARISE (Associates for Research into the Science of Enjoyment). Shows that ARISE was set up as a direct tobacco industry response to the 1988 US Surgeon General's report on nicotine addiction:
"In 1988 the US Surgeon General said "Nicotine was as addictive as heroin or cocaine." The industry responded. A group of academics was identified and called together to: * review the science of substance abuse * separate nicotine from these substances * act as a forum for scientists who think objectively." ARISE supporters are listed. Of 13, 6 are tobacco companies or affiliates (PM, Kraft, Miller, Rothmans International Services, BAT, RJR). Three conferences were held. The first in Florence in 1988 "attacked the view that nicotine is like heroin/cocaine .... * nicotine enhances performance * heroin/cocaine impair performance. Publication: "Addiction controversies" - Best Seller".
