Analysis done in the Southampton laboratories of an experimental brand specifically formulated to compete against Marlboro in the Australian market. Clearly demonstrates that Marlboro was thought to be competing via its BLEND, not just its advertising/marketing. "The blend analysis results indicate that a reasonable match in blend nicotine and sugars has been achieved." Notes that the paper used for Marlboro is far more porous, effecting subjective deliveries.

Summary: Between July 1984 to July 1988 B&W was making recommendations to the Malaysian Tobacco Company (MTC) on product modification for Lucky Strike FT since its smoke was more irritating than Marlboro, the blend was referred to as "ERIK blend guidelines". In May 1985 "B&W recommended to increase filter P.D. to 60mm and to implement 5 to 10% tip ventilation. These modifications would make the product less irritating." In July 1985 "the product was launched without implementing B&W's recommendations." In March 1987, "B&W found the product to be more irritating than Marlboro."
