Summary: |
"Evaluation of an experimental "Marlboro-Type" product from Australia, laboratory report No. L.531, restricted". Analysis done in the Southampton laboratories of an experimental brand specifically formulated to compete against Marlboro in the Australian market. Clearly demonstrates that Marlboro was thought to be competing via its BLEND, not just its advertising/marketing. "The blend analysis results indicate that a reasonable match in blend nicotine and sugars has been achieved." Notes that the paper used for Marlboro is far more porous, effecting subjective deliveries.

Reports that Marlboro Medium, the mid tar line extension, is available in eight markets outside the USA. Noting that it was introduced in Hong Kong in June 1993.
"Medium was introduced, primarily as a defensive measure, targeting male smokers who perceived Lights as too light in taste and the white filter and gold/white packaging too feminine and unmacho." (page 500051516)
"Medium is therefore positioned as THE ANSWER TO THE INCREASING NEED OF YOUNG MALE SMOKERS FOR A LIGHTER MARLBORO WITH THE TASTE SENSATION AND THE SAME FAMILIAR RED CHEVRON OF THE PARENT VERSION." (emphasis in original) (... |

Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation Research & Development memo from M.A. Hamann to Russell Cameron of the Malaysian Tobacco Company. Marcel Hamann replies to Russel Cameron on interpretation of Consumer Product Test results on two blends of Lucky Strike Filter (LF3 & LF5). B&W was interested in how younger smokers fared in these survey results. According to him, "LSF total and younger franchise smokers prefer the current product. Summary: |
Between July 1984 to July 1988 B&W was making recommendations to the Malaysian Tobacco Company (MTC) on product modification for Lucky Strike FT since its smoke was more irritating than Marlboro, the blend was referred to as "ERIK blend guidelines". In May 1985 "B&W recommended to increase filter P.D. to 60mm and to implement 5 to 10% tip ventilation. These modifications would make the product less irritating." In July 1985 "the product was launched without implementing B&W's recommendations." In March 1987, "B&W found the product to be more irritating than Marlboro." |

Obviously without a Marlboro Lights in the Malaysian market this is difficult to do." [Ed Note: Adjustments to levels are determined by competitor's brands.] |
